Building Digital Twin Model of Urban Sawmill

The team in Robot Lab is not only developing the technologies used in the Urban Sawmill (USM), but also is responsible to develop a Digital Twin model of how such Urban Sawmill can be envisioned.

A digital twin of Urban Sawmill (USM) is a digital representation of an object or process, which makes it possible to explore its potential through simulation and testing. In this research, digital twinning will be used to evaluate the performance of a plausible USM and run simulations of its production processes. For this assignment, we utilize tools such as SIEMENS Process

Simulate, a powerful tool enabling such complex simulations and digital twining process. You will be responsible for learning and applying SIEMENS Process Simulate to support the development of a Digital Twin of the Urban Sawmill (USM).

Working closely with the lead researcher, you will progressively build an understanding of the USM’s components and operations. Your tasks will include modeling these elements and programming the sequence of operations within the Process Simulate environment. Besides that, you are required to develop custom network interface and API for monitoring realtime robotic processes in order to link the physical process to the digital twin process. This step is crucial to accurately represent the USM processes within a digital twin.

You will receive access to tutorials, documentation, and lab tools to support your learning and enable a fast onboarding process. This includes setting up and configuring digital workstations in Process Simulate, as well as learning the robotic processes programmed in our physical lab setup. Your goal will be to replicate these sequences digitally to simulate the full process chain.

The final outcome will be a functional digital twin of the Urban Sawmill in SIEMENS Process Simulate, an API where collected data from production is fed into the process simulate model allowing for feedback loop between physical and digital setup. Your model should be capable of running virtual process scenarios, testing operational feasibility, and collecting data based on 3 main  key indicators of proessing time, energy usage, potential processing volume (throughput) for calculating the USM yeild of the system.
